General Business English Course

This course is for students with an intermediate or above level of English. It includes pronunciation, fluency, colloquial language (slang), grammar and writing. The course is tailored to the specific needs of the student and we aim to motivate students to want to learn and improve. We try to include topics that are relevant and interesting to the student. Improvement rates increase as students build motivation and confidence.

 

Assessment

  • In the first class, we conduct a needs analysis and pronunciation assessment. 
  • Grammar Tests can also be completed online by the student outside of class.

 

Topics to be Covered

In the second class, a course outline is provided to the student and includes an outline of topics to be covered and sounds to be practised. Specific topics will depend on the student’s skill levels, needs, interests and experience. As a general guide, the following exercises and subjects will be included: 

 

Pronunciation

i. IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet)

    Vowels, Consonants (2 sessions)

    Dipthongs (double vowel sounds, 2 sessions)

 

ii. Syllable Stress, Fluency and the Schwa Sound

  

iii. Sentence Stress (stressing words in sentences)

 

Vocab, Grammar and Writing

v.Common phrasal verbs and an introduction to Australian slang

 

vi.Australian abbreviations, nicknames, common greetings

 

vii.Letter and email writing: 

  • Includes layout, structure, introductions and endings

 

Length of Classes and Course

  • Courses may be booked in 8 or 14 week (class) blocks
  • Classes are held weekly, each class lasts 1.5 hours


Outcomes and Progress

  • Weekly exercises are given to students to ensure they can practise the exercises covered in class.
  • A recorded oral assessment is conducted at the conclusion of each block of classes. This provides a measurement of improvement from the beginning of the course.
  • A progress report is provided at the end of each block of classes.
